Finished this moments ago and still swamped by the emotions it evokes. Beautiful, harrowing and ultimately joyful, this is a complex novel which is brilliantly told in the second person. Set in an isolated puritanical community reminiscent of The Crucible, the unique voice of the mute and mutilated Judith draws in the reader with her aching unrequited love, her terrifying past and uncertain future. Part love story, part tense murder mystery, all courage, truth and heart, this is my book of the year. Six stars, at least.
